Samuel Beckett was born on 13th April 1906 in Dublin, Ireland. His father’s name is William Frank Beckett,and his mother’s name is Merry Née Roe. His father worked as surveyor of quantity, and his mother worked as a nurse. He came from middle class family. He is a protestant and lives in majority Catholic society. He began school in kindergarten at the age of five, and a year after, he began to study languages and also learned to play piano. When he was young, he joined in many sports in his school and also began to write.

Beckett began to like writing and tried to publish his stories in a school newspaper. In 1930, he tried to translate Joyce’s work “Anna Livia Phirabelle” into French with Alfred Peron. His first job was an English teacher in Normale Superiure, Paris. In the same year, he published his work Whoroscopeand he won a £10 prize from Hours Press.

In 1931, he went back to Ireland and worked as lecturer of French Literature. In the same year, he published his work Proust (criticism) in London. In 1932, he then went back to Paris and worked as teacher again. During the war in Paris, he worked in the France Resistance Group to look for  information on German troops and resist Germany. In 1945, Beckett visited Ireland and joined the Red Cross to help people. Since that, he tried to write many literary works, and one of them was En Attendant Godot. Because of this work, he got the Nobel Prize in 1970.
