LATIHAN 1
Our
earth has been rotating around the sun for billions of years. In that time
its surface has undergone numerous changes. About two billion years
ago life had a simple beginning. At first countless tiny
organisms evolved slowly, then large vegetation , and later still
a rich variety of animals come into being. Many of these animals have become
extinct and many others have remained with us until now.
The last creatures to appear were human being. They did not have an easy life on this earth, femine disease, wild animals, harsh climates and wars were their environment and managed to prevent and cure diseases. Thus over the centuries, their number had vastly increased to such an extent that it has now become a big problem. This problem is identified as over population. Unless people realize that they have to cooperate in order to check the population growth, some negative results may come up. |

The
Toraja are descendants of immigrants who entered Indonesia long time ago from
South China. They believe in ancestral worship, and one of the customs that
is still practiced today is the " death feast ". A deceased person
is not buried immediately, kept in a coffin called "tongkonan" for
as long as two years. The corpse is treated as though still among the living
and offered food and drink. This practice comes to an end only when the
burial ceremonies have taken place.
The preparation for funeral take a long time and a lot of money. These also take account of which social class the deceased belong to, because only the member of the top or "tokapoa" to which belong to the landlords and people in traditional leadership positions; and the second class or "tomakako", to which belong smaller landowner and people in the middle class position, are entitled to the most elaborate funeral ceremonies. On the other the manual workers and sharecroppers are not permitted to hold such ceremonies. |

In
the summer of 1984, almost two billion television viewer were able to watch
the Summer Olympics from Los Angeles, "Live via satellite," While
telecommunication satellite beamed the Olympics around the world, most
viewers watched the events without stopping to think about how this form of
instant communication works, or how it may affect their lives now and in the
future in both positive and negative ways.
The advantages of telecommunications systems for the rapid and efficient transmission of information to and from the home around the world have been described by communications experts. They see the development of these systems as a first step toward eliminating political and geographic boundaries by making every kind of human knowledge available to all. However, the possible disadvantages of this new technology have usually been ignored. Telecommunication can make information from around the world available to use quickly and easily, but some people worry that this may be a risk to our privacy. If personal information is stored in computers, then it may be easily transmitted via satellite to anyone who can pay for the service. Other futurists worry that telecommunications systems may isolate people from each other. They say that when people are able to shop from their homes, do their banking without leaving their house, watch movies they want on their television, as well as get information they need, then there will not be as much contact between people. The isolation may have a very destructive effect on social relations. It is important to realize that the same technology that helps us may harm us. We can prevent this from happening by monitoring the new technology. As one communication expert says, " we must remember that technology alone is not the answer. It is the intelligent application of technology that will lead us to success." |

person has vegetables, but wants fruit. Another man has a great deal of
fruit, but wants some vegetables, so the fist man gives some of his
vegetables to the second , and the second man gives some of his fruit to the
first. He has exchanged the vegetables for the fruit. Trade has made them happy.
The people have always traded. Why have they traded? They have traded because they have wanted better life. At first people exchanged their things for other things. How people buy and sell things- they trade for money. History has shown us that a country has to trade if its people want a better life. The first traders came to Indonesia for spices. But now the traders come here for many other things. The most important things are oil, rubber, thin and copra. What has trade with other countries brought us? It has brought the things that we do not make. The cars we drive, the train we ride in, and the watches that we wear are examples of these things. It is not hard to understand that they have made the life better. But we can trade only if we have more thing to sell |

central bank also provides loans to its customers. But the
customers are not individuals as in the case of commercial bank, The customer
of central banks are governments, other commercial banks and financial
institutions. A country will have one central bank, In England is the Bank of
England. In our country it is the Bank of Indonesia. The central bank often
the duty of formulating and implementing the country's monetary and credit
policies, usually in co-operation with the government.
For us individuals, the commercial bank is more important because it directly provides us with service. We can enjoy the services by establishing an account at the bank. There are two kinds of account., One is the saving account and the other is the current account. One advantage of having a current account is that we can pay using cheque. This means that we don't have to carry large amounts of money with us and risk losing it. Most banks, commercial banks, have two kinds of current accounts. One is the minimum balance account and the other is the special account. The former kind requires the customer to maintain in his account a certain amount as a minimum balance, but the bank will change the customers for each cheque he or she writes. |
