A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytani ‘r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem. Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah, nawaytu 'r-riyaada, nawaytu 's-salook, lillahi ta`ala al-`Azheem fee hadha 'l-masjid.
As-salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi ta’ala wa barakatuh! Allah (swt) said in Holy Qur’an:
وَلَوْ شَاء اللّهُ لَجَعَلَكُمْ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً
If Allah has so willed, He would have made you one nation. (Surat al-Ma'idah, 5:48)
“If Allah had wanted, yaa Muhammad (s), he would have made you one nation, one Ummah, but He made you different in order to see who will be a Believer and who will be an unbeliever.”SubhaanAllah, today Believers are less and less and unbelievers more and more. Today, as Prophet (s) said:
آية المنافق ثلاث إذا حدث كذب وإذا وعد أخلف وإذا ائتمن خان
The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks he lies, and when he makes a promise he breaks it and when he is charged with a trust he deceives. (Bukhari)
These are the major signs, besides what he carries of bad manners and bad behaviors.
Allah’s Mercy on Us When We Read Verses of Punishment
Grandshaykh `AbdAllah al-Fa’iz ad-Daghestani and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim, may Allah bless their souls, said, when you read in the Holy Qur’an about ayaat al-`adhaab, the verses of punishment on the unbelievers, what you have done as a Muslim, because you accept Tawhid--you say “Laa ilaaha illa-Llah Muhammadun Rasoolullah”--so what sins do you then have that require punishment when you read the Holy Qur’an? That’s why it is important to recite the Holy Qur'an in the Arabic language, because if Allah (swt) judged you and sent you to Hellfire, when you read ayaat al-`adhaab, all sins will be dropping from you and you will be clean as if you were born today!
With that wisdom Awliyaullah look into the greatness of Holy Qur'an, but munaafiqoon are on the other side. So what is our concern? As much as you read Holy Qur'an, whatever you have done of sins, Allah will take away these punishments and will turn them into hasanaat (meritorious actions), because you are reading the Ancient Word of Allah (swt)! Now we just heard two poets sing words of human beings, which makes people happy, but when it comes to reading Holy Qur'an, people feel that is heavy. On the other hand, people will be happy to recite songs of poets, because it shows love to Prophet (s) and Allah. If Allah gave the whole dunya to the one who reads the Holy Qur'an, he will say, “No, yaa Rabbee! I want my recitation of Holy Qur'an, even one page!” How? Because this dunya that we are running after:
لو كانت الدنيا تعدل عند الله جناح بعوضة ما سقى كافراً منها شربة ماء
If the value of this dunya weighed the wing of a mosquito, Allah would never give a cup of water for the unbelievers to drink.
The Power of “Alif. Laam. Meem.”
All of us are running to it like tigers, predators running to eat the carcasses. Wherever the hyenas find carcasses, they run after them; they don’t run after beauty, but after something that’s smelly. One letter of Holy Qur'an is an ocean! When you say “Alif,” that is an ocean. “Laam” is an ocean, “Meem” is an ocean. If Allah opens for them, these oceans will drown the whole Ummah in the Ocean of Love. You will see the whole Ummah reciting non-stop, “Alif. Laam. Meem., Alif. Laam. Meem., Alif. Laam. Meem.” We have to make a wird of “Alif. Laam. Meem.” a hundred times a day, at least. Allah will open oceans of knowledge from these three holy letters in Holy Qur'an! People ask, “What is an ocean of knowledge?” and begin to fabricate stories. This one hallucinates at night taking drugs and the next day he comes to teach us mughayyibat (knowledge of the Unseen); they invent it and think they are giving people what they want. Yes, they are giving people what their own egos! The only teacher for us is the Prophet (s): Allah (swt) made him the Guide for all Humanity!
SubhaanAllah, I was looking at a fly, comparing it to a small ant, which is like comparing a tiger or a human being to an elephant. How small is a human being in front of an elephant in body weight, not in intelligence. That ant looks at the fly as a mountain, is it not? Very small to very big, in front of the ant. I was thinking that Allah (swt) dressed them both from the Beauty of His Beautiful Names and Attributes, because they have a soul, and Allah does not allow a soul to disappear. No one knows what that soul is carrying of beauty and rewards.
How small is a mosquito? It is smaller than a fly, but still bigger than an ant or it might be the same size. One flies, one walks and both of them are small. You don’t see the ant or the mosquito, but you see the bite of the mosquito, which is bigger than the mosquito! Scientists have now discovered, and I didn’t read the entire report, that the mouth of a mosquito has a hundred or more knives that go into a person, and it tests the fluid it takes. If you put two children to bed in the same room, sometimes the next morning you will see one child was bitten by a mosquito and the other was not. Scientists discovered that the mosquito has three stomachs, three small holes like the stomach of an ant or other small creature, and when it bites it takes a little bit of fluid and tests it,in an elaborate, built-in laboratory. If it finds the fluid sweet, as Allah (swt) wanted sweetness in that little boy or girl, it sucks it up and leaves the mark of a mosquito bite. SubhaanAllah, it has a laboratory within itself.
Grandshaykh, may Allah bless his soul, said in his manuscript that I have, “A mosquito, a fly, an ant or anything that comes on your body does not come without bringing with it 70,000 hasanaat.” Allah (swt) made these small animals come on human beings. If a fly now comes, sits here and then goes, as Grandshaykh said, in their kashf (spiritual unveiling), Awliyaullah see there are 70,000 rewards that Allah sends on His servant. He said, because that animal is coming on your hand by Allah’s Will, as they cannot move without Allah’s Will, Allah will give 70,000 rewards! Awliyaullah cannot understand or know what kind of rewards Allah will give you from these 70,000 hasanaat, but you will be rewarded. So, the greatness that Allah has given us from Holy Qur'an, if that is in a mosquito, where Allah (swt) says He doesn’t feel shy to give an example of a mosquito or above a mosquito:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ يَسْتَحْيِي أَن يَضْرِبَ مَثَلاً مَّا بَعُوضَةً فَمَا فَوْقَها
Allah disdains not to use the similitude of things, lowest as well as highest. (Surat al-Baqarah, 2:26)
Even to that smallest level, scientists are now finding lots of information and still they don’t understand. In the report it said that the mosquito has more than a hundred knives in its mouth! When it bites it cuts with them like a saw, back and forth, cutting the skin. You cannot see the skin cut. It might these tubes or knives are very tiny with which they pump the poison, no one can see them except under a big microscope. If a microscope can see, why can’t we? Who is better, an abid (worshipper), the sincere, the pious, the wali, or the laboratory expert? The wali, because he can see and report. Allah (swt) also wants these scientists in dunya to report, because this is how people understand. They don’t understand that Allah is giving an example of a mosquito: they have to feel shy, scientists must bow their heads for Allah and say Kalimat t-Tawhid.
What Alif. Laam. Meem. carries of secrets no one knows. Alif is “Allah.” The beginning of the Holy Qur'an after the Fatihah, The Opening, and even in that opening is praising. Allah is praising Himself, Alhamdulillah, “Praise be to Allah,” Rabbi 'l-`Alameen, “Lord of the Heavens and Earth, dunya, human beings and all creatures.” He is praising Himself, then coming to Surat al-Baqarah after He opened the Holy Qur'an. When you read from Surat al-Baqarah, the first letter Alif represents Allah, and it is said in some interpretations that Laam represents Jibreel (a), and Meem represents Muhammad (s). In Alif. Laam. Meem. there are two reflections of the reality of Sayyidina Muhammad (s), in the two Meems.
I have one hour with Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala, looking at the Divine Presence, and I have one hour with the Ummah.
The first Meem is in the Divine Presence, the second Meem is in dunya for the Prophet (s). Every Creation must have from the beauty and Light of Noor an-Nabi (s):
رواه عبد الرزاق بسنده عن جابر بن عبد الله بلفظ قال قلت: يا رسول الله، بأبي أنت وأمي، أخبرني عن أول شيء خلقه الله قبل الأشياء. قال: يا جابر، إن الله تعالى خلق قبل الأشياء نور نبيك من نوره،...
When Jaabir (r) asked, “Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you, oh Prophet of Allah! What is the first thing that Allah (swt) created?” the Prophet (s) said, “The first thing that Allah (swt) created is the Light of your Prophet from His Light, O Jaabir.” (Musannaf `Abdu ’r-Razzaq)
That Noor is:
And know the Messenger of Allah is in you. (Surat al-Hujaraat, 49:7)
So the Light that exists in our face is from Allah’s Beautiful Name “Al-Khaliq,” from the noor of Sayyidina Adam (a) and Sayyidina Muhammad (s). We ask Allah (swt) to not make us munaafiq, saying something and doing something else.
THE THREE SIGNS OF A HYPOCRITE
The signs of the munaafiq are three.
1. When he speaks he lies. Wherever he is, whatever people say about him, “president, king, shaykh”, if he speaks he lies, he only says what you want to hear.
One time the Sahaabah (r) asked the Prophet (s), “Yaa Rasoolullah! Does the mu’min steal or rob?" The Prophet (s) replied, "Perhaps." They asked, "Does the mu’min make zina (adultery)?" The Prophet (s) replied, "Perhaps." Then they asked him, "Does the mu’min lie?" To this the Prophet (s) replied, "This, no!" Then the Prophet (s) followed it by (reciting), “Only they invent falsehood who believe not Allah's revelations, and (only) they are the liars. (16:105)” (Kanzu ’l-`Ummal, 8994)
You cannot lie to Allah (swt): when you were in His Presence as a soul, you said, “You are my Lord, yaa Rabbee, yaa Allah. Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadu ‘r-Rasoolullah.” and Allah said, “You cannot lie when I send you to dunya. You have to keep that contract between Me and you, don’t breach it.” Munaafiq breach the contract. Don’t spy on, backbite or spread false rumors on each other!
O you who believe! Avoid suspicion as much (as possible) for suspicion in some cases is a sin, and spy not on each other, nor speak ill of each other behind their backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? No, you would abhor it! (Surat al-Hujuraat, 49:12)
2. When he promises, he breaks it. If he promised you something, he doesn’t fulfill it.
3. When he is trusted, he betrays the trust. If he is trusted with something he will betray you. Be careful with these people, as they may betray you. You open your heart to everyone then slaps come from everywhere, because they are munaafiq.
Prophet (s) said, “The signs of the munaafiq are three: If he speaks, he lies. If he promises, he doesn’t fulfill. If he is trusted, he will betray you.” He doesn’t care! He goes in front of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and speaks bad about you and about everyone to make himself look presentable, as the person who is perfect. You can see this all around the world in every country. There are countries where they lie and put someone in prison for nothing, due to their own arrogance and hatred.
May Allah (swt) forgive us and teach us. Even if you don’t know the Holy Qur’an, open it. Even a convert, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) used to say, “Put your Shahadah finger under the ayaat and read along as those ayaat carry a lot of noor.” Tt will reflect on your eyes, then it will take away all the sins from your eyes, as sin comes from hearing and seeing, both sides. When you hear and see, sins come quickly. May Allah protect us.
Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
